The good news about the new season of NBC’s hit television show “The Biggest Loser” is that there is no more Jillian Michaels. The bad news is that everybody else is still there.
I have heard all of the defenses of the show; it’s popular, people lose weight, it’s inspirational. These rationalizations reveal just how low we have set the bar, how little we’ve come to expect and how “un-critical” our thinking is.
The show is exploitative and anything but inspirational. A handful of people are hand-picked from a figurative sea of troubled contestants. So-called fitness professionals engage in various forms of physical and emotional abuse, employ the worst kind of pop psychology and get into areas that are beyond the appropriate scope of practice. In short, the trainers behave towards clients in a manner that would get them fired in the real world.
The show worships at the alter of weight-loss and exudes negativity, from the title of the show to the attitudes of the trainers. There have been news stories detailing the methods the show’s producers use to keep past contestants from talking in public about their experiences on the show. If the show, and the contestant experience, is so fantastic and life-changing why not allow unfettered access to those who have been lucky enough to be a part of it?
I would love to hear from the people who went through the entire process and got on the show, only to be voted off the first week because they lost only 15-pounds instead of 20. How uplifting and inspirational do you think the first week’s loser’s story is? How do you think they are doing now.
This year the contestants will have the privilege of working with under-achieving tennis player and pin-up girl Anna Kournikova. The producers of the show have lowered the bar to the point where they aren’t even aspiring to get a “celebrity personal trainer” on staff; being famous and looking good in a tennis skirt is the new criteria. Super.
Actually, since “The Biggest Loser” is an appearance-based show at least the producers upgraded their training staff. I can’t imagine anyone pining for the days of Jillian.
So let the dysfunctional, weight-loss games begin.
The television show “The Biggest Loser” has little to do with health and fitness, and is far from reality. What it is, is a big business that generates about $100 million per year, business that exploits people and spreads false hope and misinformation about what constitutes a healthy lifestyle.
The Wednesday November 25 edition of the New York Times featured a front page story on the alleged reality, fitness show, “The Biggest Loser.”
One of the key issues highlighted in this story indicates there’s very little reality involved with “The Biggest Loser,” in that over 200,000 people audition for the show via videotape submission or open casting calls. If this show was real in any way shape of form, the producers of the show wouldn’t have to pick a handful of contestants, but would take any overweight person, and certainly wouldn’t need to conduct casting calls.
According to the Times story, doctors, nutritionists and psychologists not affiliated with the show question the methods used on “The Biggest Loser,” and point out that rapid weight loss can cause more problems than it solves. As I mentioned in the previous installment of this story and as included in the Times story, season one winner Ryan Benson suffered myriad problems as a result of his severe regimen, including urinating blood as a result of self-induced dehydration, and now weighs about the same 330-pounds he did before appearing on the show.
Dr. Charles Burant, a professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan and a director of the Michigan Metabolics and Obesity Center says, “I think the show is so exploitative. They are taking poor people who have severe weight problems whose real focus is trying to win the quarter million dollars.”
J.D. Roth, an executive producer of the show says the show is extreme and, “It needs to be extreme.” He goes on to say that he believes the show is a public service and inspires people to be healthier. Clearly many former contestants, as well as fitness experts and medical pros, would disagree with Roth’s assessment of his show.
Kai Hibbard lost 118-pounds in season 3 and agreed with Ryan Benson, saying that unhealthy behaviors were rampant among the contestants on the show. Hibbard said contestants drank as little water as possible . She finished the show at 144-pounds but wound up weighing 175-pounds 2 weeks later simply because she started drinking water again. The Times article goes on to say that the winners of the first 4 seasons have gained back at least 20 percent to their season-ending weight.
Add to the mix the unprofessional treatment of the contestants that’s doled out by the show’s fitness experts and the questionable training methods they prescribe, and you have the makings of a disaster. Dr. Burant says he’s waiting for the first heart attack to happen. Considering this season’s first show featured a one mile run that sent 2 contestants to the hospital, this heart attack could happen during any 6 hour workout.
It’s no wonder “The Biggest Loser” has contestants sign documents limiting their ability to speak to the press and waivers that basically give the show carte blanche to run contestants through the ringer. And getting a peek behind the scenes it’s clear that obese, out-of-shape people exercising for up to 6 hours a day under extreme circumstances isn’t reality, isn’t inspiring and isn’t healthy.
It’s bad enough that Jillian Michaels enjoys humiliating the contestants on “The Biggest Loser,” but now Michaels looks to spread her sphere of humiliation by pimping her Extreme Maximum Fat Burner supplement.
The supplement industry is great at ignoring research, in that they continue to pump out new brands of nonsensical weight-loss products despite the fact that there’s not much in the way of reliable science to justify the existence of such products. Michael’s Extreme Maximum Fat Burner represents classic supplement sketchiness.

Michaels continues her ill-informed ways, promoting the myth that body fat is harmful and losing body fat somehow makes a person more fit. In the promotional material for her Extreme Maximum Fat Burner we’re told Michaels’ product, “Contains a unique blend of natural compounds designed specifically to help your body lose fat. Not just weight, but actual body fat.”
This is a bit of a stretch.
Before looking at the “Maximum Strength Fat Burner Proprietary Blend,” let’s talk about the “Proprietary Xanthine Complex (PXC).” This PXC is nothing but approximately 500 mgs of caffeine, or 5 cups of coffee worth and as much caffeine as you’d get in about 40 ounces of Red Bull. Nothing screams health and fitness like dosing up caffeine, right? This should be called the “Stimulant Complex.”
The primary ingredient in this mix is a substance called Yerba Mate, which has purported weight-loss powers, along with guarana, coffee bean extract and cocoa extract. However, science rears its ugly head. According to a review of existing scientific data titled, “Dietary Supplements for Body-Weight Reduction: A Systematic Review,” that was published in the April 2004 edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, yerba mate – along with several other dietary supplements – has no weight-loss properties.
Here’s the conclusion of the study, “The evidence for most dietary supplements as aids in reducing body weight is not convincing. None of the reviewed dietary supplements (including yerba mate) can be recommended for over-the-counter use.”
The fat burner blend contains conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), which is purported to have fat-loss/weight-loss properties. Science is the best weapon to combat supplement hucksters. The March 2006 edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition published the study, “Conjugated Linoleic Acid Supplementation for 1 year Does Not Prevent Weight or Body Fat Regain.” The title says it all, but here’s the conclusion. “Daily CLA supplementation for 1 year does not prevent weight or fat mass regain in a healthy obese population.”
It should come as no surprise that a fitness professional that lacks credibility would shill a dietary supplement with a shaky pedigree. Stay away from Jillian Michaels’ Extreme Maximum Fat Burner.
