Alex Rodriguez’s Press Conference Did Not Make Things Better

ARod’s Tampa Dog and Pony Show didn’t help the slugger’s case and if anything raises more questions about his behavior.  Rodriguez has supposedly employed the services of a high-powered public relations firm to help him deal with his steroid scandal, but it’s hard to believe this is that case base on his performance today.

Here are the problems with ARod’s mea culpa press conference.

  • He mentioned his “cousin” as being the source of his drugs but refused to go into more detail. ARod will rue the day he mentioned this “cousin.”  Is this “cousin” still supplying him with performance-enhancing drugs and could this be why he wasn’t more forthcoming?  The press will be on the trail of this person and won’t let ARod rest until they can find out who he is.
  • Rodriguez keeps relying on the, “I was young and naive excuse,” for his behavior. He was 25-years old and the highest paid player in the game.  He wasn’t a 20-year old rookie but a guy with seven big league seasons under his belt when he arrived in Texas.
  • ARod talked about using Ripped Fuel – and over-the energy supplement – as if it was a prescription amphetamine.  At one point Ripped Fuel contained ephedra, a now-banned stimulant. This is not even worth mentioning, as use of this supplement doesn’t rise to the level illegal steroid use.
  • He claims he didn’t know what he was taking – and didn’t’ even know if he was talking it correctly – but continued to take it for at least 2 years and didn’t ask anyone for assistance.
  • Rodriguez claims he didn’t know for sure that he tested positive but never tried to get more details and confirm if he failed a drug test.
  • ARod was stumped by 2 New York Post reporters who asked intelligent questions and revealed ARod to be a fraud. Mike Vaccaro asked why he didn’t ask for help if he didn’t think he was doing something that was legitimate and Joel Sherman asked how he could be injected at least 36 times over 3 years and not know what it was?

It’s hard to believe a public relations firm helped Alex Rodriguez with his story and these answers.  There were more low-lights than highlights from this press conference and as this story develops serious journalists, not the talking heads who don’t want to be bothered with this issue, will dig deeper and find more holes in ARod’s story.

This isn’t the end of the story for ARod, but just the beginning of a long a tortuous season.
